Fire Extinguisher Use

The proper technique for using many types of fire extinguishers can be explained in one simple acronym:

P     A     S     S

Pull - pull the safety pin from the trigger handle assembly at the top of your fire extinguisher.
Aim - firmly grasp the nozzle in the appropriate location, to see where that is follow the manufacturers instructions, and then aim the nozzle at the base of the flames.
Squeeze - squeeze down the handle assembly to dispense the flame retardant.
Sweep - in an fluid motion; sweep the nozzle from side to side while aiming at the base of the fire and keeping a safe distance from the fire.  Slowly work your way forward until the flames go out.

Some manufacturers have various distance recommendations for fighting a fire.  Fire extinguishers have a numerical value of how much fire a particular extinguisher can combat.  It is highly recommended that you read and understand proper usage of any fire extinguisher PRIOR to actually needing to use one.  Never turn your back on a fire.  Stay and monitor the area for potential flare ups.
